Winner: Mark McNeil, Hamilton Spectator

In each of his submissions, Mr. McNeil writes in an effectively streamlined manner yet there is an attention to impactful detail. He shows considerable range in the varied topics of his submitted columns, and each column covers a wide arc of material in the relatively short space that is a reality of daily newspapers.

Runner-Up: Robin Baranyai, London Free Press

Whether writing about the impact of pandemic income supports or teacher vaccinations or the trucker at the centre of the Humboldt Broncos crash, Ms. Baranyai provides clear logic, tangible evidence – such as the pertinent statistics on Canada’s suicide rate during the pandemic – and relevant heart and humanity.

Runner-Up: Anam Latif, Waterloo Region Record

Ms. Latif breaks new ground in her columns with fresh perspectives expressed with forcefully expressive and memorably evocative writing. These columns have a memorable punch to them.
