COVID-19 Photography

Winner: Bob Tymczyszyn, St. Catharines Standard

Bob Tymczyszyn’s single image of two tour boats passing near Niagara Falls manages to perfectly tap into the international conversation about COVID-19, capturing the vast disparity of responses in Canada and the U.S at the time. The U.S. Maid of the Mist, operating at 50-per-cent capacity, is packed with passengers, while there are only a handful of passengers on the deck of the Hornblower from Canada — a stark and compelling visual study in contrasts. It’s no wonder the image went viral on both sides of the border.
