COVID-19 Photography
Winner: Bob Tymczyszyn, St. Catharines Standard
Bob Tymczyszyn’s single image of two tour boats passing near Niagara Falls manages to perfectly tap into the international conversation about COVID-19, capturing the vast disparity of responses in Canada and the U.S at the time. The U.S. Maid of the Mist, operating at 50-per-cent capacity, is packed with passengers, while there are only a handful of passengers on the deck of the Hornblower from Canada — a stark and compelling visual study in contrasts. It’s no wonder the image went viral on both sides of the border.
Runner-up: Elliot Ferguson, Kingston Whig-Standard
Elliot Ferguson’s portfolio of photos show the range of new normals of COVID-19 — geared-up paramedics, pastors preaching to empty churches, at-home workouts — infusing drama and mood into each shot.
Runner-up: Dax Melmer, Windsor Star
When Dax Melmer and a reporter were given exclusive access to Windsor Regional Hospital’s three COVID-19 hot zones, he effectively captured not just the daily battle frontline medical staff face, but also the enormity and emotional weight of the team effort.
