Hamilton Spectator reporter Denise Davy spent four months researching the issue of children’s mental health for her series, “One in Five”.
The seven-part series explored the national crisis through interviews
with parents, professionals and politicians.
Davy’s series struck a chord with readers who overwhelmingly emailed and called to thank her. A local teacher’s federation moved to adopt a B.C. school-based mental health program that Davy profiled.
At Queen’s Park, NDP leader Andrea Horwath called to make children’s mental health services mandatory. Ontario Ombudsman investigated the issue of long wait times, as a direct result of the series.
Davy was named journalist of the year at the 56th annual Ontario Newspaper Awards ceremony in 2009.
